The YMCA building was constructed in 1911 following an open architectural competition won by Ivor Jones and Percy Thomas from Cardiff. The building is arranged over ground, upper ground, mezzanine, first, second and third floors.
Externally, the building has imposing brick elevations with fine decorative red terracotta details whose style has been described as "confident Edwardian Baroque" with inspiration from Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
